The coronavirus has challenged all of us to improvise and innovate in hopes of a better future. While you have been sheltering in place, Hospice Care of the Lowcountry has continued to provide compassionate care to patients and families at end-of-life. We have worked to come up with new ways to meet the needs of our patients, families, and those that are grieving during this time.

We are busy with new patients, including those suspected and proven positive with COVID-19. Although safety is always a top priority, we are taking it even more seriously than before. Our team members who are working in patient homes are wearing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) which includes gowns, gloves, goggles, face shields, and masks when appropriate.

As the virus claims the lives of people around the world, and those in our community, loved ones are left to struggle with the death and heartache of not being there. Our grief, bereavement, and counseling staff continue their community support through one-on-one calls, virtual support groups, and memorial services, and creating memory books for loved ones. The Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants at Hospice Care of the Lowcountry continue to be on the frontline every day to care for those with terminal illnesses and faced with increased end-of-life challenges.

We recognize the many challenges this pandemic continues to make for our patients and the community as a whole. Many people are struggling with the loss of a job, inability to pay a mortgage or other bills, buy essential groceries, make sure their children are taken care of through home-schooling, and the struggles of isolation in general.

Hospice Care of the Lowcountry has also partnered with a community-wide economic stimulus initiative called Help4Hope. This program garners support for community members especially affected by this crisis by providing them with meals from participating restaurants, while also working to support local businesses and save jobs in our community.

We are a strong, resilient community and are confident that as we work together, we will pull through these challenges. Until then, we hope you will join us in keeping our community members in mind who are struggling.
