We would like to share with you a few examples about how you help us serve your community:

Hurricane Matthew – Before, during and after: Hospice Care of the Lowcountry was in constant contact with a hospice patient and her family who decided to stay on Daufuskie Island during Hurricane Matthew. Staff checked on them immediately following the storm. With no power, the family turned to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry to help transport her to a secure environment. With the help of other community partners, the patient and family were relocated to the parent’s home in Macon, GA, via a ferry ride, ambulance transport and the provision of needed hospital bed and supplies. This patient was surrounded by her loved ones at the end.

Caregiving also means focusing on what the family needs:  Ms. M needed daily care but did not have the financial resources and was extremely reluctant to have her sister provide hands-on care. Tough discussions were gently and lovingly started by the Hospice social worker between the two sisters. Thanks to The Hospice Caregivers Relief Fund, created by Hospice Care of the Lowcountry and funded by donors, a private duty caregiver was hired to provide relief for the family. Relieved of her role as caregiver, she now had an opportunity to just be a sister. She could use her time to sit with her sister, hold her hand and share family memories and stories, all part of providing comfort with dignity to both patient and family.

Focusing on our patients physical, emotional and spiritual needs: True love touched the staff at Hospice Care of the Lowcountry. The staff and volunteers rallied to facilitate a wedding to fulfill a cancer patient’s lifetime wish to marry his teenage sweetheart. Something old, something new and something blue, with traditional vows; added up to a union 21 years in the making.

Examples like these show how important you are to our continued ability to provide the highest quality of ongoing caregiver support. Working together we make the difference. We are so fortunate to live in a strong, tight-knit community in the Lowcountry. You have demonstrated that over and over again with your involvement, commitment and gifts. We were touched by your spirit and grit these past weeks, as you extended your heart and generosity toward your neighbors and organizations dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew and beyond.

Because of you and your support, Hospice Care of the Lowcountry staff and volunteers were able to join with other community partners to provide critically needed caregiver support during the stressful days of the storm and aftermath, as people returned to their homes, and in so many other ways to people in need.
