Anchorage, Alaska

What is your favorite place that you’ve lived or visited?

Hawaii

What convinced you to move to the Lowcountry?

The weather!

What is your current occupation? If you are retired, what was your past career?

I’m retired – used to work in management in a law office.

What are three of your favorite hobbies?

Reading, volunteering, and cooking.

What is your most memorable moment in volunteering with HCL?

My first successful fundraiser!

Who is your most memorable patient?

Emma Crossen

What have you learned in your experience volunteering with hospice?

The many areas hospice interfaces in an individual’s life.

What inspired you to volunteer with HCL?

My sister had a debilitating stroke at 63.

Do you volunteer with other nonprofits in the area?

Yes.

Have you or your family been personally affected by hospice?

No.

What is your happiest or most rewarding volunteering story?

Making blueberry pie for a patients’ 84th!

What is your favorite part of volunteering with hospice?

There are many areas to make a difference.

How does HCL’s mission inspire you?

It inspires me to always look for ways to make a difference.

What skills make you a better volunteer?

Communication, compassion, and companionship.

What do you wish people knew about HCL?

There is a great group of volunteers!

How has being a hospice volunteer changed your outlook on life?

It’s only reinforced my belief to be kind.

What is your most irrational fear?

Heights!

What age would you choose to be permanently? Why?

None – they all have their drawbacks.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

My mind – for reading!

What is something you would never do again?

“Dunkin’ for Dollars – a fundraiser where if you get the target you get dumped in Anchorage, Alaska.
